Red soil, paddock edges and watering a large area
The soil near the cane fields is often deep red volcanic loam, which is fertile, holds water well and sets hard when dry. It makes good garden beds once loosened and mulched, but turf laid on rock-hard clay-like ground may not root. Fixing this before planting is cheaper than replanting.
Watering an acre-style lot by hand is rarely realistic. Many properties use bore water, tank water or mains for irrigation, and quality and supply vary. Some bores carry iron or salt that can stain paving and harm plants. Long pipe runs need correct sizing so far zones get enough pressure. Gates, fences and paddock edges create access issues for machines, and we plan around them. It helps to know where your water comes from and any limits that apply.
